The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) is scheduled to flush water mains in the City of Lansing beginning Tuesday, August 1 through Monday, September 18. The completion date is approximate and is subject to change. The BWL will be providing updates as to the progress of this work on the BWL Facebook page.

The general boundaries of the area to be flushed are:

  • Bordered on the north by Mt Hope Avenue.
  • Bordered on the south by Jolly Road.
  • Bordered on the east by Pennsylvania Street.
  • Bordered on the west by Washington Avenue.

About 4,000 BWL customers are in the areas where the water main flushing will take place.

Water main flushing is a routine procedure by the BWL to remove accumulated sediment and maintain water quality in the water distribution system. The procedure has no effect on the water’s safety for drinking or other uses.

Customers may experience fluctuations in water pressure and changes in water clarity during flushing. Water will clear and pressure will return to normal shortly after each day's flushing. The procedure will take place between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Once flushing is finished for the day, customers are advised to run the cold water tap until the water runs clear.

While discolored water is safe to drink, customers may prefer to draw some tap water into a pitcher and refrigerate it the night before.

Customers in the affected area can call (517) 702-6490 with questions or concerns.
