SIX WAYS

TO

SAVE WATER

Saving energy starts by

considering a whole-house energy efficiency plan. Look at your home as an energy system with interdependent parts. Energy-efficient

improvements can make your home more
comfortable
and reduce your

energy costs. You

will find that little

improvements can

add up to big savings.

Here are some helpful ways to save energy.

Heating & Air

Conditioning

· Install a programmable

thermostat. It will control the temperature automatically without sacrificing comfort.

ENERGYWISE SMART TIPS

+ Repair leaky plumbing fixtures! A dripping faucet can waste 20 gallons of water  each day, which equates to over 7,000 gallons per year.

+ Turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth. Use a cup for rinsing.

+ Operate dishwasher and clothes washer only when there is a full load.

+ Install energy efficient shower heads and faucets that use less water.

+ Water your lawn only when it needs it.  Water in early morning or late evening to minimize evaporation.

+ Mulch around shrubs and trees to retain moisture longer.  Consider landscaping with plants and grasses that require little or no water.

· Clean or replace your

furnace filters regularly. Have your furnace and air conditioner inspected

annually.

· Reduce your air conditioning costs by planting trees and shrubs to shade your house. Close drapes and blinds on hot days.

· Improve comfort levels

and reduce costs by

installing weather stripping and caulking around doors and windows. If the windows are single pane, consider installing storm windows.

Appliances

· Purchase ENERGY

STAR appliances.

The ENERGY STAR label

assures you that the appliance exceeds federal efficiency

standards.

· Set water heater on low/

medium (120—140˚ )

· Keep the coils clean on

the back or bottom of the refrigerator and/or freezer.

lighting

· Replace incandescent

light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs in light fixtures where they stay on for several hours each day.  Compact fluorescent bulbs are 4 times more efficient, cost less to operate and last 10 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs.

· Use natural day light  where possible.

· Install motion sensors or a timer on outdoor lights.
