Lansing Board of Water & Light Commissioners have chosen Sanford B. Novick as our utility’s new Director and General Manager.
Sanford B. Novick
Novick comes from the private sector, but he’s no stranger to public power. In his most recent position he was executive vice president and chief operating officer of Mississippi Valley Gas Company (MVG) based in Jackson, Mississippi. Late last year, Atmos Energy completed an acquisition of MVG, the state’s largest natural gas company.
Earlier, Novick worked 25 years for Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division, Tennessee’s largest municipally-owned utility. Beginning as an engineer, he advanced to vice president of the utility’s Operations Division.
As this issue of Connections went to press, the BWL’s executive committee and Novick were negotiating the details of an employment agreement and Novick, who was born and raised in the south, was brushing up on his northern accent. |

· When you wash your car, use a bucket, and keep a sprayer on the end of your hose so you can shut off the water flow when you don’t need it. · Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways, walks and patios. · Water your lawn in the early morning or evening. Watering under the hot midday sun, you’ll lose as much as 30 percent of your water to evaporation. · Lawns can only absorb water so fast. It’s better to water your lawn for three 10-minute sessions-with each session a half hour apart-than it is to water steadily for 30 minutes and cause runoff.
The BWL’s latest customer survey indicates some positive attitudes about Lansing’s hometown utility.
The survey, conducted in mid-May, showed that 86 percent of electric customers and 79 percent of water customers are satisfied with the BWL as their utility provider. The survey was conducted for the BWL by Market Strategies, Inc. (MSI), a Livonia-based market research firm that conducts surveys for electric and gas utilities all over the country. It consisted of telephone interviews with 400 randomly picked residential customers.
93% of our customers said we did a good or extremely good job of providing reliable electric and water service, and 87 percent gave us good marks for restoring power when outages occur . . . 89% said our customer service representatives were friendly and helpful in dealing with questions about the customer’s bill . . . |

It was a hot time at the BWL’s Lansing Chili Cook-Off held downtown on June 6.
More than 5,400 dedicated chiliheads savored more than 1,100 gallons of chili prepared by 28 restaurants and organizations. Attendees enjoyed a beautiful outdoor evening in downtown Lansing, and grooved to the live sounds of two local favorites, Those Delta Rhythm Kings and Steppin’ In It. |
|
Best of all, the Cook-Off raised more than $27,000 for two great causes-Adopt A River and the HOPE Scholarship Fund. Thanks from the bottom of our hearts to all of you who joined in the fun. In case you missed it, the trophy winners were: People’s Choice Gold: Radisson Seville’s Silver: Kellogg Center State Room |
