Sometimes we get phone calls from customers who return home after being away for two or three months, only to discover they still have a water bill waiting for them when they return.

“How can I owe you money when I didn’t use any water?” they ask. The answer is that only part of your monthly water bill is based on consumption. The rest is a fixed charge to cover costs we incur regardless of usage. It includes things like customer service, billing, and the cost of maintaining our water plants.

The fixed monthly charge is based on the size of your water service. For customers with a 5/8-inch meter, the charge is $6.20 per month. For customers with a larger, 3/4-inch meter, it’s $8.68. Those charges appear each month on your water bill, regardless of your usage.

Some customers choose to have their water shut off if they’re going to be gone for more than a month or two. If they’re a sewer customer this avoids the monthly charge for both utilities. When they return, we turn their service back on for a reconnection fee of $7.00.

With the lightning season now in full swing, it’s a good time to consider how to protect your sensitive electronic equipment from damaging power surges.

We have a service you may want to consider. It’s called SurgeSentinelÔ, a whole-house surge protection program that keeps unwanted power surges from damaging appliances, computers, stereos, DVDs or other sensitive electronic equipment.

SurgeSentinelÔ offers two levels of protection. Level 1 includes a device installed on your electric meter. It protects all electro-mechanical devices such as refrigerators, air conditioners and stoves. Level 2 adds sensitive electronic equipment to the protected items in your home.

SurgeSentinelÔ is available to residential customers who own their own homes. For more information, call us at 702-6006, or click here.

Friday, June 6, is a red-letter
day for chili lovers throughout
the Greater Lansing area.

If you find yourself without electricity, you can reach the BWL quickly and easily by using our PowerLine number.

Call us toll free at 1-877-BWL-5001. Chances are you’ll never get a busy signal even during a major power outage. That’s because our PowerLine number processes up to 40,000 calls per hour.

PowerLine uses your phone number to automatically determine your address, so if we don’t have your current phone number, the system won’t work perfectly. Check your current bill. If your correct phone number isn’t printed on the bill, please write it down in the space provided on your payment stub and return it with your payment.

That’s the date of the BWL’s 2003 Chili Cook-Off, guaranteed to be the best and biggest yet. Highlights this year include:

· More chili and more elbow room as we add five new booths and expand even farther along the riverfront next to The Lansing Center;

· All the chili you can eat for just $5 per person;

· Two great bands that will make the music as hot as the chili, as local favorites Steppin’ In It and Those Delta Rhythm Kings rock from the north and south ends of the venue;

· Good times and great chili for two worthy causes, with all proceeds benefiting Adopt A River and the HOPE Scholarship Fund for Lansing school students.

All the fun happens from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. along the riverfront in downtown Lansing. And if it rains? No problem. We simply move inside the Lansing Center and keep serving up the chili.
