With lots of sun and warm weather, summer is a favorite time in mid-Michigan. Unfortunately, it can also be a time when Mother Nature kicks up her heels. We’ve already experienced some severe storms in our area, and the summer storm season has a long way to go. Despite our best efforts, that can lead to power outages. If we have your current home phone number, you can report your outage quickly and easily by calling our PowerLine phone number at 1-877-BWL-5001. It’s a toll-free number that can handle up to 40,000 calls an hour, so your call is practically assured of getting through to us. PowerLine records your outage information quickly and automatically, but in order for it to work properly, it must recognize your telephone number. Check your BWL utility bill. If your correct phone number isn’t printed on it, please write it down in the space provided on your payment stub, and return it with your utility payment.
Violent summer storms can cause electrical surges that damage or destroy sensitive electronic equipment in your home. The BWL has a program that provides protection against this happening to you. It’s called SurgeSentinel, a whole-house surge protection program that keeps unwanted power surges from damaging or destroying electrical equipment in your home. SurgeSentinel offers two levels of protection. Level 1 consists of an external, whole-house surge protector installed on your meter to protect all electro-mechanical devices such as refrigerators, air conditioners and stoves. Level 2 includes Level 1 coverage, but also adds individual power strips that protect sensitive electronic equipment such as stereos, computers, VCRs and DVDs from damage. SurgeSentinel is available to residential customers who own their own homes. For more information, click here or call us at 702-6006. |

Reporting Chances are, if a street light is out in your neighborhood, you know it before we do. We replace old street lights on a regular schedule, but if an individual light is out in your neighbor-hood, we depend on our customers to let us know. You can report a street light outage quickly and easily. Just call the BWL Customer Service Department at 702-6006. A Customer Service Representa-tive will take your name, address and phone number and the exact location of the street light as closely as you can identify it.

The Lansing Fire Marshal Division wants to help Lansing area residents avoid the tragedy that can result from home fires. Here are some safety reminders that can protect you from a disaster: · Maintain smoke alarms. Test them once a month by pushing the test button. Change smoke alarm batteries once a year. · Plan and practice an escape plan. Know two ways out of every room in your home. Make sure windows and doors open easily. Plan around the abilities of all house residents. · Wear fitted clothing when cooking. Never leave cooking items unattended. · If you smoke, use large, deep ashtrays. Be sure all cigarette butts are extinguished before emptying ashtrays. · Stop, drop, and roll. If your clothing catches on fire, STOP (don’t run), DROP gently to the ground, cover your face with your hands, and ROLL, over and over again to smother the flames. |
