FOR ADOPT A RIVER!

BWL GOAL

IS ‘GREENER’ ENERGY

The Lansing Board of Water & Light made history in January. The BWL’s Board of Commissioners adopted a policy for investing in or

I heard that Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero has accepted the “Energy Star Challenge.” What does that mean?

-- E.H., Lansing

In his State of the City address, Mayor Bernero said Lansing would become the second city in the nation to take up the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star Challenge. It calls for a 10 percent improvement in the energy efficiency in city-owned buildings.

The challenge is open not only to cities, but to any individual. How? By buying electrical appliances and other items with the Energy Star label. The label means these products have been tested and approved as energy-efficient.

Everything from refrigerators and televisions to compact fluorescent light bulbs and cordless cell phones are rated by Energy Star.

buying renewable energy from sources like wind turbines and landfills gases. We believe the BWL is Michigan’s first utility to have this type of policy, called a Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard.

Our goal is to have seven percent of electric retail sales come from renewable energy sources by the end of 2016. Why is that important? Because renewable energy pollutes less than traditional energy sources. Our policy is in keeping with similar goals being recommended at the state level.

You may already know that since 2001, the BWL has had a GreenWise Program that allows customers to buy electricity from one type of renewable energy – generated by hydroelectric dams in Lansing and northern Michigan. Our new renewable energy policy is a common-sense addition to our established GreenWise Program. To learn more about GreenWise, visit our Web site: www.lbwl.com.

ADOPT A RIVER . . . OR A TREE!

There’s a new wrinkle to our award-winning Adopt A River program. This spring, you can Adopt A Tree as well!

At the Saturday April 21 Adopt A River cleanup, the BWL will GIVE AWAY A TREE A MINUTE for one hour. For a chance to win a free sugar maple, fill out the entry form (below) and bring it to Adopt A River on April 21 before 10 a.m. The event’s headquarters is at Impression 5 Science Center, 200 Museum Drive. Impression 5 partners with the BWL to host Adopt A River.

We will begin drawing winners at 10:30 a.m. You need not be present to win. However, we do request that winners pick up their trees by the end of the Adopt A River event.

PLUS, we will be giving away 250 white pine seedlings, free!

PLUS, 150 fruit trees will be on sale at a deep discount during Adopt A River. See the $10 off coupon below.

PLUS, the Ingham Conservation District will be selling pine seedlings.

Whether you buy a tree or win one, all we ask is that the owners give their “adopted” tree plenty of tender loving care, which includes not planting it near power lines.

P.S.: You don’t have to take part in Adopt A River to win or buy a tree. But you’re welcome to take part in this great event!
