BWL, Lansing schoolchildren to unveil the FalconCam at Moores Park Elementary School

Lansing Board of Water & Light General Manager J. Peter Lark will join Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero and students from Moores Park Elementary School as they unveil the “FalconCam” on Wednesday, April 23, 2008.

The FalconCam, a remotely operated Web camera, allows anyone with access to the Internet to view Lansing’s only known peregrine falcons as they nest.
Since September of 2007, Moores Park schoolchildren have collected coins to buy the Web camera, which has now been installed atop the BWL’s Eckert Power Station. BWL employees also contributed to buying the FalconCam, and BWL technical crews installed the camera, software and other equipment necessary to bring the FalconCam online.

Details:

Where: Moores Park Elementary School, 316 Moores River Drive, Lansing. The school is located across the Grand River from the Eckert Power Station.

When: 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 23.

What: The FalconCam, a remotely operated Web camera for viewing nesting peregrine falcons. Anyone in the world with access to the Internet can view Lansing’s peregrine falcons, by going to the BWL Website, www.lbwl.com
The Web site will offer video clips of the falcons, and still photos of the nest site will be “refreshed” every 15 minutes. The FalconCam was installed unobtrusively near the nest, 153 feet above ground.

Who: BWL General Manager J. Peter Lark, Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero, Dina Maneval, BWL employee who spearheaded the FalconCam project, Principal Mara Lud and the children of Moores Park Elementary School of Lansing.

Why: Peregrine falcons are considered the fastest raptors on Earth. They are also on Michigan’s endangered species list. The FalconCam allows Lansing-area schoolchildren to view Lansing’s only pair of peregrines as they nest – and, hopefully, produce baby peregrines this spring!
