BWL awards 8 area schoolchildren in first annual Earth-friendly poster contest
Eight Lansing-area schoolchildren were honored for their award-winning environmental posters at a ceremony today during the annual spring Adopt A River Day.
Lansing Board of Water & Light General Manager J. Peter Lark, Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero and Erik Larson, Executive Director of Impression 5 Science Center, announced the winners at the conclusion of Adopt A River.
Each child's school will have a tree donated and planted on school grounds, compliments of the BWL.
More than 200 schoolchildren entered the first annual Earth-friendly poster contest, organized by the Lansing Board of Water & Light and Impression 5 Science Center. The contest is meant to foster awareness of the need to be good stewards of the environment.
A winner was chosen from each grade, kindergarten through fifth. Additionally, a Grand Prize winner was announced, as well a prize for the poster with the Best Message.
Winners are:
Josie Earle, kindergarten, Wilcox Elementary School, Holt.
Nipuili Gunaratne, first grade, Central Elementary School, Okemos.
Ana-Maria Pislaru, second grade, Midway Elementary School, Holt.
Esther Huff, third grade, Winans Elementary School, Waverly.
Kaira Liggett, fourth grade, Winans Elementary School, Waverly.
Stella Lee, fifth grade, Wardcliff Elementary School, Okemos.
Baileigh Grabow, Best Message, Midway Elementary School, Holt.
Olivia Lee Jones, Grand Prize, Pleasant View Elementary School, Lansing.
Olivia Lee Jones' Grand Prize-winning poster now becomes the official Adopt A River poster for a year.
Each of the eight winners received a gift card from Barnes & Noble Bookstore and a free family membership to Impression 5.
More than 500 people turned out for Saturday's Adopt A River Day. More than 200 families each “adopted” a flowering dogwood or ornamental cherry tree. The trees were free, compliments of the BWL, and came with planting instructions and “adoption papers.”
