*UPDATE* Power restored to about 12,000
BWL customers following Saturday’s storm
Lansing Board of Water & Light crews today restored electrical power to about 12,000 customers following the late Saturday storm that swept through Greater Lansing.
Soon after the pre-midnight storm hit, about 19,000 BWL customers were without power. About 6,800 customers still do not have power.
The outages are widespread and are due a number of storm-related factors, including tree limbs on wires, downed wires and lightning strikes.
BWL crews remain working around the clock to restore power to affected homes and businesses. It may be Monday evening before power is restored to all customers.
Approximately 8,000 customers had power restored between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. today. Of those remaining without power, many are customers in south and west Lansing.
All “critical need” customers such as nursing homes are considered top priority for power restoration. These “critical need” customers have had electrical power restored.
The storm created one of the largest single outages in recent years for the BWL and its customers. The 19,000 customers who were initially without power constitute approximately 20 percent of the BWL’s 97,000 electricity customers.
The BWL is Michigan’s largest publicly owned utility.
