*UPDATED 3:25 p.m.*
Power restored to about 13,000 BWL
customers following Saturday’s storm
Lansing Board of Water & Light crews today restored electrical power to about 13,000 customers following the late Saturday storm that swept through Greater Lansing.
Soon after the pre-midnight storm hit, about 19,000 BWL customers were without power. About 5,800 customers still do not have power.
The outages are widespread and are due a number of storm-related factors, including tree limbs on wires, downed wires and lightning strikes.
BWL crews remain working around the clock to restore power to affected homes and businesses. It may be Monday evening before power is restored to all customers.
Approximately 8,000 customers had power restored between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. today. Of those remaining without power, many are customers in south and west Lansing.
Lansing officials and the BWL are eying a new weather pattern that may reach Lansing this afternoon or evening. The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Lansing and surrounding communities.
Saturday’s storm created one of the largest single outages in recent years for the BWL and its customers. The 19,000 customers who were initially without power constitute approximately 20 percent of the BWL’s 97,000 electricity customers.
Customers can report a downed power line by calling 371-6314 or 371-6000. Residents are warned not to go near downed power lines.
