*UPDATE*
Power restored to many BWL customers;
2,700 still remain without electricity

Board of Water & Light officials today said that approximately 2,700 customers remained without electrical power by mid-afternoon. Weekend storms had knocked out power to more than 19,000 BWL customers.

The BWL now estimates it may be Friday evening before electrical power is restored to all customers.

Many of the remaining outages are caused by trees and tree limbs that have fallen on power lines that directly serve residences. Using that example, even when power is restored, it may mean just a few customers will have electricity again.

The storms created several hundred such instances, which means it takes time for crews to individually address each outage.

The BWL has contracted with private firms to acquire seven crews to assist the BWL in restoring power.

Customers can report a downed power line by calling 371-6314 or 371-6000. Residents are warned not to go near downed power lines.
