BWL Commissioners create new diversity policy
The Lansing Board of Water & Light's Board of Commissioners has adopted a new diversity policy whose aim is to make the company an industry leader in diversity and to better represent the make-up of the Greater Lansing community.
“Our society's great strength is the diversity of its people,” said BWL General Manager J. Peter Lark. “We intend to represent that strength in our workplace, through our employees and our suppliers.
“Diversity is not simply the right thing to do, it is of vital concern to our company's future success,” Lark added. “Our company must mirror the community it serves, and in doing so, we will attract and retain a talented workforce for today, and for tomorrow.”
The Corporate Inclusion, Equity and Diversity Policy was approved by commissioners at the Tuesday, March 25 board meeting. The policy explicitly calls for the BWL to become an industry leader in hiring, promoting and retaining employees with diverse backgrounds, cultures and experiences.
The policy states that the BWL recognizes the importance of inclusion, equity and diversity among its workforce, suppliers and the community it serves. It further states that the BWL will aggressively support the growth and development of a diverse pool of suppliers, applicants and employees.
The policy's intent is to make opportunities available to all genders, ethnic groups, races, sexual orientations, socio-economic statuses, ages, physical abilities, religions and localities.
The BWL is Michigan 's largest public utility, and is the 30 th largest public utility in the United States .
