Portions of East Kalamazoo Street will close As BWL replaces lead service lines
Portions of East Kalamazoo Street east of Pennsylvania Avenue will close for
approximately two weeks, beginning Monday, April 20, as the Lansing Board of Water &
Light continues its program to replace every lead service line in its municipal water
system.
The affected area is the 4-block portion of East Kalamazoo Street between
Pennsylvania Avenue and Clifford Street. Initially, westbound lanes of East Kalamazoo
will be closed from Eighth Street to Clifford, April 20-24. From April 27 through May 6,
all lanes on East Kalamazoo between Pennsylvania Avenue and Clifford Street will be
closed.
Area residents have been notified by BWL and City of Lansing officials. Construction
and detour signs are being erected.
The lead service line work is expected to be completed by May 1. In cooperation with
the BWL, following the lead line work the City of Lansing will resurface that portion of
Kalamazoo Street on May 5-6.
In other lead service line work:
The BWL will also replace lead service lines serving customers on portions of
East Mount Hope Avenue. Work from April 20-27 will involve a lane shift but
not a lane closure. From May 6-13, seven blocks of East Mount Hope between
South Pennsylvania Avenue and South Cedar Street will be closed to complete
lead service line replacement.
Once the BWL work is complete, the city will resurface that portion of East Mount
Hope.
The Lansing Board of Water & Light’s program to replace all 13,000 lead lines in its
water system is now more than half complete. The BWL is ahead of schedule in its 10-year program to replace every lead service line.
BWL customers who have questions about lead service lines can call our Customer
Service Department at (517) 702-6006.
