BWL teams up to give energy-saving LED holiday lights to customers

The holiday spirit is about to get brighter – and more energy-efficient – thanks to the Lansing Board of Water & Light’s plans to exchange new strands of LED holiday lights for customers’ old strands of incandescent lights.

Beginning on Nov. 19, current BWL residential electric customers can exchange strings of working incandescent holiday lights for new LED (light emitting diodes) holiday lights. The offer is good while supplies last.

“Last year, the BWL partnered with another local company to purchase LED holiday lights for Michigan’s official Christmas tree on the grounds of the state Capitol,” said BWL General Manager J. Peter Lark.

“This year, we are taking the next, logical step – getting LED holiday lights into the hands of our customers. It’s our way of saying ‘Happy holidays’. Plus, it’s a gift that keeps on giving, because LEDs are very energy efficient.”

LEDs are brighter, last longer, and are up to 90 percent more energy efficient than incandescent lights.

The holiday light exchange is part of the BWL’s Hometown Energy SaversSM program, which offers incentives for customers to upgrade to more energy-efficient lighting and appliances. Partnering with the BWL is Jackson-based HolidayLEDs.com. The company is recycling the old, incandescent strands of holiday lights.

To qualify for the holiday light exchange, a person must be a BWL residential electric customer. Customers should bring used, working incandescent strands of lights to the locations listed below. Each customer must show a valid Michigan I.D. and a current BWL electric bill.

There is a limit of two strands of LED holiday lights per household. Supplies are limited.

The BWL is working with the City of Lansing and the City of East Lansing to make the LED lights available at three sites. BWL’s Holiday Light Exchange will take place at the following locations:

Where: Go Green! Holiday Event Lansing City Hall When: November 19 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Where: Lansing Board of Water & Light Customer Service Center 1232 Haco Dr., Lansing

When: Nov. 19 through Dec. 4 Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Where: City of East Lansing Public Works Office 1800 East State Rd., East Lansing

When: Nov. 19 through Dec. 4 Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
