Have some ‘Hugs’: Special ice cream celebrates BWL’s 125th anniversary
The Lansing Board of Water & Light, in partnership with Melting Moments Ice Cream of Lansing, has created a new ice cream to commemorate the BWL’s 125th anniversary.
The ice cream is named “Hometown Hugs”, a play off the BWL’s slogan: Hometown People. Hometown Power. The ice cream flavor is dark cherry (representing one of Michigan’s most famous fruit crops) with bits of milk chocolate and white chocolate.
The ice cream will be featured at the BWL’s Open House on Tuesday, Feb. 16 in the company’s boardroom, 1232 Haco Drive. The ice cream, along with cake and refreshments will be served to the public from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
“We wanted to add an element of fun in our anniversary celebration,” said BWL General Manager J. Peter Lark. “A special ice cream with a BWL theme was a natural, and Melting Moments eagerly accepted our request to make this unique treat.”
A companywide employee contest was held recently to come up with a name and a flavor for the ice cream. Wendy Sorek in the BWL’s Information Technology Department had the winning name. Susan Diaz in the BWL’s Line Department came up with the winning flavor.
Hometown Hugs ice cream will be served at various BWL events throughout 2010.
Additionally, Melting Moments is working with Celebration! Cinema in Lansing to serve ice cream sandwiches made with Hometown Hugs. Celebration! Cinema expects to have BWL Hometown Hugs ice cream sandwiches for sale at its concession stand during the Valentine’s Day weekend.
Melting Moments did not charge the BWL anything for creating the new ice cream.
The BWL Anniversary Open House on Feb. 16 will commemorate the founding of the Lansing Water Board, forerunner of the BWL, on Feb. 16, 1885. A special exhibit of BWL photos and artifacts will be on display.
The BWL is one of Michigan’s oldest utilities and is Michigan’s largest public utility. It has more than 97,000 electric customers and nearly 56,000 water customers.
