BWL spring cleaning tip:
Let us haul away your old fridge!
The Lansing Board of Water & light has its own version of “cash for clunkers” – and springtime is the perfect time for BWL customers to take advantage of it.
The BWL’s Hometown Energy SaversSM program pays residential electric customers $30 to remove older, energy-wasting refrigerators and freezers. The BWL arranges to have the appliances hauled away, free of charge.
The old appliances are then recycled in an environmentally responsible manner.
“Our refrigerator and freezer recycling program gives residential customers a head start in their spring cleaning chores,” said BWL General Manager J. Peter Lark. “They will also get a $30 check from us, and they should see significant savings on their electric bills because older refrigerators use more electricity than newer models.”
Lark said many people continue using older, inefficient refrigerators after they buy new ones. An old fridge or freezer can account for up to 15 percent of an average customer’s electric use.
“Retiring a second refrigerator in your home can result in savings of up to $150 a year in energy costs,” Lark said.
BWL partners with a firm, JACO Environmental, to ensure that the old appliances are properly recycled. Recycling prevents about 95 percent of the recyclable materials in the freezers and refrigerators from ending up in landfills.
BWL residential electric customers can schedule to have their appliances hauled away – free – by calling 1-877-270-3519, or by visiting the BWL website, BWL Hometown Energy Savers.
Refrigerators and freezers must be between 10 and 30 cubic feet in size, and must be in working condition.
The BWL’s refrigerator and freezer recycling program is one of several of our Hometown Energy SaversSM programs designed to help residential and commercial electric customers use less energy, manage their bills and protect the environment.
