BWL to host 3rd annual
Hometown Power 5K for charity

The Lansing Board of Water & Light will host its third annual
BWL Hometown Power 5K on Saturday, August 13. Event
proceeds will go to Pennies for Power, a BWL program that assists families struggling to pay their utility bills.

“Every year, Pennies for Power helps hundreds of Lansing area
families pay their utility bills,” said BWL General Manager J.
Peter Lark. “Our Hometown Power 5K is just another way of
engaging the community in this worthwhile endeavor. It’s fun, it’s family-oriented, and it’s for a great cause.”

In 2010, the BWL Hometown Power 5K raised more than
$3,000 for Pennies for Power.

Pennies for Power, administered by Capital Area Community
Services (CACS), encourages customer donations by providing
easy methods for giving. Customers may choose to round their
utility bill up to the nearest whole dollar, or round it up to the
nearest dollar and then add an extra dollar.

They may also choose to make a one-time donation. Each
customer’s January statement includes his/her total contribution for the previous year and can be used for tax purposes.

Pennies for Power contributes about $40,000 each year to a
fund that assists Lansing-area families with their utility payments.

This year’s BWL Hometown Power 5K takes place Saturday,
August 13 at 9 a.m. It will start at the Customer Service Center at 1232 Haco Drive and follow a scenic course on the Lansing River Trail. This year, more than 350 runners are expected to take part.
Features of the race include:

  • Finishers’ medals for each racer completing the run.

  • Technical running shirts (made from synthetic
materials that wick away moisture, dry faster, and
    are cooler than cotton).

  • Hometown Hugs Ice Cream and sandwiches after the
    event.

  • A free Kids Fun Run with medals for all participants.

Registration before August 5:
Individuals: $19
Family: $58 (up to four family members)

Registration after August 5:
Individuals: $25
Note: The family rate expires after August 5.

Additional race information as well as online and
