BWL to remove fly ash from
Eckert Power Plant

In accordance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations, the Lansing Board of Water & Light will remove fly ash from its Eckert Power Plant, November 5 through November 14.

The material will be transported to a landfill or to a company for recycling. Fly ash is the residue from coal combustion. Coal is used at the BWL’s Eckert and Erickson power plants to produce electricity.

In order to remove the fly ash, the BWL will use several vehicles equipped with high-powered vacuums to remove the material. While in operation, these vacuum trucks generate a loud noise.

Initially, the vacuum trucks will operate around the clock – for up to four days. After that time period, the trucks will mainly operate during daylight hours.

Neighboring residents and businesses have been notified about the fly ash removal process.
