  • Frozen Pipes

When cold temperatures strike, the possibility of frozen water lines increases. According to Michigan State Police, the Michigan Committee for Severe Weather Awareness estimates a quarter-million homes are damaged each winter due to frozen water pipes.

There are steps all BWL customers can take to help prevent frozen pipes before cold weather hits:

    • Insulate pipes found in crawl spaces, basements and attics, as they are most susceptible to freezing.
    • Open cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate plumbing.
    • Disconnect garden hoses during winter months and shut off and drain water from faucets outside.
    • If you’re away, leave the thermostat set to at least 55 degrees.

Water main pipes are typically buried four feet underground with extension lines running into homes and businesses. While water lines buried at this level fall below the frost line during most winters, extended cold streaks can lower the frost line, resulting in lines freezing. A BWL crew will dig, expose and thaw the frozen line, or hook up water to a neighbor’s service until the line can be thawed.

If your pipes do freeze, call the BWL immediately at 517-702-6490.
