BWL Continues Responding to Storm Damage and Outages

Aug 25, 2023 9:31 AM

The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) is continuing to respond to widespread outages following last night’s storm. BWL crews have been working around the clock to make repairs and continue assessing storm related damage to provide more accurate estimated restoration times. Updates will follow when more information is available, and will also be posted to BWL’s Outage Map.

“We’ve got all hands on deck to make sure we’re getting power restored as quickly and safely as possible,” said BWL General Manager Dick Peffley. “This is the largest mobilization we’ve ever had in the field responding to a storm. We’ve also called in over 40 additional mutual aid line and tree crews from New York to West Michigan to get to work for the people of Greater Lansing.”

The storm resulted in over 30,000 outages, 190 lines down and more than a dozen broken poles throughout the BWL service territory.

Customers who have experienced a single service outage due to mast damage are responsible to have repairs done before the BWL is able to restore power. Customers may use any of the BWL approved electrical contractors to have repairs made and payments financed interest free for 12 months. Please stay at least 25 feet from downed lines. Intersections with traffic signals out should be treated as 4-way stops.

Customers should report power outages and downed lines by calling 877-295-5001. Outages can also be reported by visiting the Outage Center at www.lbwl.com/outagecenter, using the BWL Outage Center mobile app or texting “out” or “outage” to 898295 or txtbwl.
