Lansing BWL Celebrates Public Power Week
The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) is celebrating Public Power Week, October 4-10, along with approximately 2,000 public power utilities across the country that collectively provide energy to 55 million Americans. This week was also officially recognized in Michigan, where Gov. Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed October 4-10 as Public Power Week.
As a publicly owned utility, the BWL is accountable to the people it serves because it’s owned by the City of Lansing. Like all public power utilities, the BWL has no shareholders or private interests, and revenue is directly invested back in the Lansing community through upgrading infrastructure, strengthening the electric grid, increasing cybersecurity efforts and more.
“Public power is about more than just providing utility services to our customers. It’s about being part of the community we serve and giving back to keep that community a great place to live, work and raise a family,” said BWL General Manager Dick Peffley. “Public power week is an opportunity to celebrate that commitment and remind our customers that their Hometown utility is here and ready to serve them.”
To celebrate, the BWL invites community members to participate in Public Power Week events, including:
- Monday, October 5 – Customer Appreciation Day, Haco Customer Service Center, 1232 Haco Dr., Lansing from 11:30am-1:30pm
- Wednesday, October 7 – Storytime at the Downtown Capital Area District Library, 401 S. Capitol Ave., Lansing at 10:30am
As part of BWL’s commitment to the community this week, employees will also volunteer to clean up Woldumar Nature Center.
The BWL has provided public power to the Lansing community for nearly 135 years. Today, the BWL has approximately 800 employees and serves approximately 100,000 electric and 58,000 water customers across the greater Lansing area.
