Peak Power Partner Demand Response Program

Category:
  • Homeowners & Renters,

Become a Peak Power Partner with BWL's smart thermostat demand response (DR) program. Residential electric customers who enroll will help manage energy consumption during times of high demand or grid stress.

You will receive a $50 gift card when you successfully enroll in the program and a $25 gift card at the end of each year if you opt-in to at least 50% of yearly energy events. *Google Nest customers need to remain enrolled through the end of the year in order to receive the $25 reward.

How Does the Program Work?

Smart Thermostats

BWL residential electric customers who purchase an eligible smart thermostat or already have an eligible device installed to control their homes' central A/C systems can participate in BWL’s program.

Identification of Peak Demand Period

The BWL monitors energy consumption patterns and identifies times when demand is expected to be highest. It usually happens during hot summer days when people are using their central A/C systems to cool their homes.

Energy Events

BWL will notify participants at least 24 hours before upcoming energy demand events. This notification can be sent through various channels like emails, text messages or through the Homeowner Portal. (You can set this portal up after you have been approved to participate in the program). Manufacturers may also send a notification at any time.

Once participants are approved for the program, during an energy event BWL will send a signal to each enrolled smart thermostat during the event and slightly adjust the temperature settings for that thermostat. Participants can choose to opt-out of any particular event.

Temperature Adjustments

The smart thermostat automatically adjusts the temperature settings within pre-set parameters specified by the utility. For example, during an event, the thermostat will increase the temperature by a few degrees (typically 2-4 degrees) no longer than four hours.

After the event, the smart thermostat will automatically return to its usual temperature set point.

Monitoring and Evaluation

The BWL monitors the effectiveness of the program, assessing its impact on peak demand reduction, energy savings and overall grid reliability, and adjustments may be made based on performance and participant feedback.
