A Calling to Serve

Holding several titles and wearing many hats, Elizabeth Hernandez is consistently on the go, wanting to better her community and help those around her be the best they can be. She’s a volunteer guru, always looking to show up and lend a hand; and she brings that energy to work with her at the BWL.

Elizabeth’s knack for giving started when she was 11 years old. There was a food pantry at the church she went to and when the person in charge had to step out for a few minutes, they asked Elizabeth to help give food to families who were arriving. She let them choose their own food and she began to realize how fortunate she was to have enough to eat at home. Elizabeth grew up in Detroit, and saw this need become larger and larger as she got older. Eventually, she would realize service was her life’s purpose and something that brought her great joy.

Fast forward a few years and Elizabeth started a family. Just like their mom, her kids were involved in everything, and Elizabeth’s volunteering translated into making the most of her time while she was a Waverly Warrior & Grand Ledge Comet parent. Between the two schools, she dedicated her time to PTO groups, the athletic boosters, the Piranhas swim board and the Waverly Marketing Committee.

Today, her children are all grown and her service has, too. Elizabeth continues to fill her cup by inspiring people and serving others, holding the title “president” for five organizations around the greater Lansing community and as an involved member and volunteer in many more.

Not only is Elizabeth very active in the Lansing community, but she’s held several positions since being at BWL, from starting in Electric System Integrity to now being in Human Resources. She’s been a valuable asset to the BWL and continues to find ways to make the company a better place to work, including ramping up the health and wellness offerings to keep the workforce healthy and active.

When reflecting on her long history of service, Elizabeth recognized that some of the organizations she supports have been around for generations, some over 100 years. These organizations were established by people who saw a need and stepped up to meet it. She feels privileged to follow in the footsteps of those who came before her, and remains committed to honor the legacy she inherited and pass it on to whoever comes next.
