BWL Restores Nearly 97% of Customers Following Tornado

May 19, 2025 11:51 AM

The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL), with the help of mutual aid crews, has made significant progress restoring nearly 97% of customers following the tornado that touched down in Lansing Thursday night. Approximately 700 customers remain without power as crews continue to work around the clock.

Over 50 BWL and mutual aid line and tree crews are currently working to address approximately 40 downed wires, 20 broken poles and nearly 40 tree-related service requests.

“I want to thank our entire workforce for working continuously to keep our customers informed, safe and getting the lights back on,” said BWL General Manager Dick Peffley. “As crews are in the field, they may find a tree on the line, a broken pole or even damage in multiple locations. We’re doing our best to make sure the most accurate information is available, and that’s why those times may continue to change.”

BWL is continuing to urge people to stay at least 25 feet from downed lines.

Customers who have experienced an outage due to mast damage must have their mast repaired by a licensed electrician before the BWL is able to restore power. Masts are owned by customers, not the BWL, but customers may still use any of the BWL approved electrical contractors to have repairs made and payments financed interest-free for 12 months. Click here for more information.

Customers can check the status of an outage, and report an outage or downed line by calling 866-710-8222, visiting the Outage Center at www.lbwl.com/outagecenter or using the BWL Outage Center mobile app.
